CSM Henry Salazar

Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Henry Salazar, 90, of Fayetteville NC, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2015 in his home surrounded by loved ones and nursing staff. Henry was born on September 20, 1925 in Park City Utah, Son of the late Jose Federico Salazar and Bernardita Lobato Salazar. Henry was married to his wife Cecilia Aragon for 68 years. He served 4 years in the Navy and was in the Pacific Campaign of WWII. Henry then joined the Army serving 26 years and retired Command Sergeant Major. Henry was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star w/V, 4 OLC, Soldiers Medal, Air Medal w/V & 25 OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/2 OLC, Meritorious Unit Emblem (3rd Award), Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal w/OLC, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (ROK), Philippine Liberation Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Emblem, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal & the Master Parachutist Badge. After retiring from the Army Henry sought to further his education and earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology. He was a lifelong student, passionate about health and fitness, had a love for his dog Pancho and cat Tansy, and loved working in his yard. Henry is survived by his wife, Cecilia Salazar; two sons, Robert Salazar of Vancouver Washington, Henry Salazar Jr. and wife Yolanda of Quezon City, Philippines; two daughters, Katherine Smith and Husband Rusty of Nine Mile Falls, Washington, Linda Keel and Husband Eddie of Fayetteville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, James Edge III, Andrew Edge, Morgan Smith, Collins Smith, Stephanie Inderlied & Willard Watson III; three great-grandchildren, Chance Ratley, Ada Marie Inderlied & Grayson Lee Smith. A celebration of his life will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
